No child should go hungry during the school day. The National School Lunch Program helps millions of families by providing free or reduced-price meals — and applying is simpler than you might think.
How the Program Works
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally funded program that provides nutritionally balanced meals to children at participating schools. Families can qualify for free meals or reduced-price meals (no more than $0.40 per lunch) based on household income.
Income Eligibility Guidelines
For the current school year, these are the general thresholds:
- Free meals: Household income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level
- Reduced-price meals: Income between 130% and 185% of the poverty level
- A family of four earning roughly $40,560 or less may qualify for reduced-price meals
Automatic Eligibility
Your children may automatically qualify without filling out an application if your household participates in:
- SNAP (food stamps)
- TANF cash assistance
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
Many schools now offer free meals to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Check with your school district — you may not need to apply at all.
How to Apply
Step 1: Pick up an application from your child’s school or download it from the district website.
Step 2: Fill out household size and income information for all members.
Step 3: Submit to the school. Most applications are processed within 10 school days.
Step 4: Your child’s meal status will be updated in the cafeteria system — no visible distinction at the register.
