How Meals on Wheels Works

Meals on Wheels is a network of community-based programs that deliver nutritious meals directly to the homes of older adults who are unable to shop for or prepare their own food. Beyond the meal itself, the daily visit from a volunteer provides a critical safety check and social interaction.

Eligibility

While specific requirements vary by program, Meals on Wheels generally serves:

  • Adults age 60 and older
  • People who are homebound or have limited mobility
  • People who have difficulty preparing meals due to physical or cognitive limitations
  • Spouses of eligible participants (regardless of age)
  • People with disabilities in some programs

There is no income requirement for most Meals on Wheels programs. While a voluntary donation is often suggested, no one is turned away for inability to pay. The program is funded through the Older Americans Act and local donations.

How to Enroll

Step 1: Visit mealsonwheelsamerica.org and enter your ZIP code to find your local program.

Step 2: Contact the program directly or call your Area Agency on Aging.

Step 3: Complete a brief assessment to determine your needs and meal preferences.

Step 4: Meals are delivered on a regular schedule — often daily on weekdays, with frozen meals for weekends.

What Volunteers Do

Meals on Wheels volunteers do more than drop off food. They check on the well-being of each recipient, provide a friendly interaction, and report any concerns to program staff. For many isolated seniors, the volunteer visit is the only in-person contact they have each day.

The Social Benefits

Research shows that Meals on Wheels reduces food insecurity, improves nutritional health, and decreases feelings of isolation and loneliness among participants. The program also helps seniors remain in their own homes longer, reducing the need for more costly institutional care.
