HUD-VASH: How It Works

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines Housing Choice Vouchers from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by the VA. It is specifically designed for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who need ongoing support to maintain stable housing.

HUD-VASH Eligibility

  • Must be a veteran (verified by VA)
  • Homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness
  • Eligible for VA healthcare
  • Willingness to participate in case management services
  • No income minimum — the voucher adjusts based on your income

To apply, contact your local VA medical center and ask for the HUD-VASH coordinator. The VA completes an assessment and, if eligible, refers you to the local Public Housing Authority for a voucher.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)

SSVF provides rapid re-housing and homelessness prevention assistance to veteran families. Services include help with security deposits, first month’s rent, utility payments, moving costs, and temporary financial assistance. SSVF is delivered by community-based nonprofit organizations.

In a housing crisis right now? Call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838). Counselors are available 24/7 to connect you with local resources and emergency housing options.

VA Grant and Per Diem Program

The Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program funds community-based organizations that provide transitional housing and supportive services to homeless veterans. These programs typically offer structured living environments with access to employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, and life skills training.

State Veteran Housing Programs

Many states operate their own veteran housing initiatives, including state veteran homes that provide long-term care, and state-funded rental assistance programs specifically for veterans. Contact your state’s Department of Veterans Affairs for details on programs in your area.
